Collection items are listed after the bio. When you needed to know something about synagogue or Bath history you asked Donald Povich. Donald Povich was born in Bath, Maine in 1927 and was a lifelong resident of the city he loved. He was a son of Morris S Povich and Eva Povich and grandson of Nathan and Rosa Povich, all founding members of the synagogue.
He graduated from Morse High School in Bath and after two years in the Merchant Marine during World War II, attended and graduated from the University of Maine at Orono where he met and married his wife, Janice Goldstein. They had two children, Lon and Elaine.
Many people knew Donald from his men's store in Bath, founded by his father in 1916, and which Donald operated for over forty years after his father’s death.
Others remember Donald as the guy who always had a story about someone or something. It seems his favorite line was "That reminds me of..." and he would go on to tell a funny and interesting story from Bath's past.
Still Others remember Donald for his decades of involvement in the community life of Bath. It was understood that if a community effort was underway, Donald was in the middle of it, if not leading the endeavor.
In addition to being a leader in Beth Israel Congregation he was also busy with The Chamber of Commerce, United Fund, Bath Merchants Association, Bath Memorial Hospital, Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts, Girl Scouts, B.P.O.E. and Masons, Downtown Economic Development Committee, Bath Little League, Personnel Service Committee of Bath, Patten Free Library volunteers and the Bath Country Club.
Donald was one of the original small group of volunteers who founded the Bath Historical Society in 1989. He served as the first President and as a Trustee during virtually all the years of its existence. He was truly a lover of history and delighted in telling the children about the pioneers of our community and their difficult but fascinating lives. Indeed, his enthusiasm brought to life the days of old for those children.
Before he died Donald had been collecting stories and doing research about the synagogue in Bath. His intention was to write a book.
Donald’s daughter described his favorite cup. It was plain white on the outside with a painting on the inside. He would say it what was inside that was most important.
