Abstract
The hybridization of comedy talk and public affairs programming such as Bill Maher's Politically Incorrect on Comedy Central, the dominance of talk shows on cable news networks, and the heavy reliance of talk on reality shows have all contributed to this state of generic uncertainty and flux within the traditional talk show genre.[...] Al Auster examines how HBO, free of the content constraints of the broadcast networks, transformed traditional genres into original series (The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Sex and the City), which have produced a groundbreaking sensibility in comedie and dramatic programming.
