Abstract
This special issue presents theoretical investigations on the future of generative AI (GenAI) in education. We initiated the call for papers for this collection shortly after the release of the first ChatGPT in November of 2022. Since then, GenAI tools and products that use machine learning are rapidly proliferating across education, work, and daily life with uneven effects. As a public concept, the term GenAI possesses almost mythic status, suggesting that heretofore singularly human abilities of creation – of text, images, art, music – can be equally or better achieved by machines. But the term ‘GenAI’ is not uniform or without complications. Designed for a range of uses, these tools vary in their complexity and accuracy. No single GenAI tool is fully transparent; the black box problem acknowledges that its operations often elude technologists. Meanwhile, generative AI is quickly becoming more autonomous.
