Abstract
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) gives accountability to government agencies for the environmental impacts of their projects. This environmental impact assessment (EIA) goes through the initial steps of NEPA in assessing the hypothetical excavation of the pre-Revolutionary War era ship Defiance from Short Sands Beach in York, ME. With the current threat of sea level rise, the salvage of the shipwreck may become impossible in coming years. The preservation of the remains of the Defiance are of significant historical value and merit preservation for continued research and public education. This EIA examines the impacts on local ecology, air and water quality, historical resources, and socio-economic factors of the project along with the required needs for preservation of the excavated remains of the ship and its storage and display.
