Abstract

Immigrants come to the U.S. for new opportunities and to create better lives. Yet many immigrants face challenges integrating into U.S. society after arrival in the country. One such challenge is being underemployed, as they face barriers securing professional opportunities that allow them to utilize their professional degrees, skillsets, and education that they acquired in their homeland. Many face challenges entering the American workforce that U.S.-born citizens do not experience. This qualitative research is focused on identifying challenges immigrants face during integration into the U.S. society. Data is collected through semi-structured interviews with representatives of immigrant communities (n = 10) Data analysis aims to present ways to minimize the challenges and barriers through introduction of best practices and approaches that can inform policy and improve immigrant integration, so that they can achieve their goals and thrive. Ultimately, helping new Americans thrive will not only have lasting impacts on their wellbeing, but it can positively impact the economy and society at large.
