  • The Magic Flute Program [2005] by University of Southern Maine Department of Music and University of Southern Maine School of Music

    The Magic Flute Program [2005]

University of Southern Maine Department of Music and University of Southern Maine School of Music

    Written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

    Directed by Walter Stump

    Musical Director Ellen Chickering

    Choreographer Annette L. Bourque

This production was entered in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) XXXVII.

    From the program:

Mozart's masterpiece uses a light touch and beautiful music to retell a simple story borrowed from the popular literature of the day. Watch the magic unfold as opposites attract and collide in this tale of youths' journey toward maturity which, perhaps in the process, reveals the composer's vision of humanity and its progress toward enlightenment.

As the opera opens, the naive Prince Tamino is saved from a serpent by the Three Ladies who serve the Queen of the Night. The Queen appears and charges Tamino with rescuing her daughter, Pamina, who has been kidnapped by Sarastro, the High Priest of the Sun. Tamino is joined in his quest by the Queen's birdcatcher, Papageno, who serves as his comic reflection. After receiving the magic flute and bells, the pair are led by Three Spirits. At Sarastro's temple, Tamino learns that the Priest is not the villain, but has rescued Pamina from her mother's dark kingdom. As Tamino and Pamina fall in love, they learn they must undergo trials to test their loyalty and courage before they may be admitted to Sarastro's fellowship. Papageno, who lacks these qualities, still finds happiness in the girl of his dreams. As the Queen of the Night is banished, the forces of Light triumph and the opera ends with a paean to Beauty and Wisdom.
