Abstract
The Year of the Fox is a multi-character novel set amid the nascent culture war of the early 1990s. In it I explore the anxieties, fears, contradictions, and dark secrets that lurk beneath the pastoral surface of a predominantly white and Christian community in rural America. At the heart of the story are two boys, age eleven, best friends whose families are driven apart when a fanatical preacher brings his apocalyptic visions to town. Beset by forces beyond their control, the boys go to extraordinary lengths to be reunited.
Included are the first chapters of The Year of the Fox and selected scenes developed into short plays to demonstrate my interest and growth in that genre. This project synthesizes work begun prior to my time at Stonecoast and the fundamentals of craft that I have acquired and honed since.
