Abstract
Growing evidence indicates that a significant rural-urban disparity in life expectancy exists in the United Sates. This authors describe health equity challenges that face rural Americans, noting the poorer economic circumstances of rural populations and the lack of access to health care professionals. Understanding and improving the health of rural populations is challenged by both poor access to data on rural health and the socioeconomic and geographic heterogeneity of rural places and populations.
