Abstract
The development of medication management strategies often falls under the scope and responsibility of 6 the athletic trainer. Therefore, the prepared clinician must develop policies and procedures that fall into 7 accordance with federal and state laws with consideration of the setting of their employment. In some 8 cases, in emerging settings (dance companies, aerobatic troupes, and live theaters), the athletic trainer 9 may be the sole resource responsible for the storage and establishing a location for medication to be 10 dispensed. These athletic trainers are advised to develop an interprofessional relationship and 11 collaboration with a physician for the prescription of controlled substances. When working with youth 12 athletes in a clinical setting, traditional or emerging, the athletic trainer must have an understanding of 13 the prevalence of different medications within the demographic as to best provide educational care 14 incorporating health literacy to larger (e.g., paracetamol) or smaller (e.g., opioids) groups of athletes. 15 Management strategies need to be developed from a perspective prioritizing public health as to better 16 develop policies producing data driven outcomes with the consideration of value-based care decisions.
