Abstract
Glen Creeber, who teaches film and television studies at the University of Wales, begins this book by discussing the inherent difficulties associated with defining and constructing a canon of distinguished television programs. Although all canons are, in the end, dependent on a set of standards and definitions that are open to bias and subjective judgments, they have a tendency to harden over time into unassailable collections. Despite the apparent complications involved with forming a canon, Creeber asserts that scholars, students, and viewers are continually making evaluative judgments about television programming every day, both inside and outside the classroom. After more than fifty years of television history, it is finally time for scholars to determine and recognize television programs that have been highly influential on a social, cultural, and aesthetic level.
