Use of AI in personalized study material, and potential benefits on knowledge retention and learning

Abstract

Throughout the past few years, generative artificial intelligence has improved drastically. Artificial Intelligence has the potential to produce various forms of content based on the information it’s given (Imran, M., & Almusharraf, N., 2024). It can produce text, documents, images, and more. Previous research on AI discussed its potential capabilities, AI use in education, and AI with personalized learning. Depending on student use, AI could be used unethically to produce work for assignments or get answers. If AI were used ethically to produce personalized learning content, would it have a positive impact on students' learning and knowledge retention compared to traditional means of studying? Is AI capable of producing personalized learning content? The goal of this project is to prepare for a future research study on AI in student use. AI will be evaluated to see if it’s capable of the potential to produce content. Methods used for this project: 4 forms were created using Google Forms in preparation for future research. These consist of a recruitment form, consent form, study material, quiz, and follow-up question forms. For AI testing, ChatGPT-5.2 and Gemini 2.5 were tested on content generation through various prompts on learning styles. Results of the study showed that both ChatGPT and Gemini were capable of producing legible learning content, though they each have their strengths and weaknesses. The future research will consist of around 8 students split into two groups of 4. The groups are broken into group AI, which will use AI to study the material given, and group B, which will use the material in a more traditional way of studying. They will have a limited time to prepare for a short multiple-choice quiz. The results will be recorded through the results of the quiz and follow-up questions given to group A.
