Abstract
Organizational leaders attempting to enact change-management activities often encounter various levels of resistance by other organizational members. Member resistance can impede organizational change and development. The purpose of this study is to identify causes and suggest future strategies to mitigate resistance. Through a qualitative methods approach, the researcher recruits volunteers of subject groups consisting of leaders and followers to participate in an interview process. Data collected from interviews and past literature is used to inform two key questions: 1) What are the causes of resistance toward organizational change? 2) What are effective leadership strategies to reduce resistance? Data collected is analyzed for common themes, interpreted, and used to provide strategies for leaders executing change-management initiatives. The grounded theory approach attempts to provide an open interpretation of the data to form answers to the research questions. In doing so, the study also identifies areas that indirectly inform the research and can be used for future or extended research.
