Abstract
Lili Boulanger was a French composer during the early 20th century. Although a master of harmony, her work has been greatly overlooked by both the performance and scholarly world. This research project will largely focus on her most prominent vocal work, "Clairières dans le ciel". To best understand Boulanger and her work, I will go to France to consult primary sources which include early compositional drafts, personal letters, and audio recordings not obtainable in the United States. My research will help me to present a multimedia lecture recital featuring the first staged production of Boulanger's music. This performance project will introduce her to a contemporary audience and breathe new life into her work and memory.
