Abstract

Food insecurity can be defined as not having access to adequate, nutritious foods at all times. Many individuals have been impacted by food insecurity during the pandemic some, more than others. COVID-19 has revealed that individuals of color have been and still are disproportionately vulnerable to food insecurity. People of color are disproportionately vulnerable to food insecurity due to systemic racism in the food system, employment opportunities, high rates of income inequality, and hard-hit job losses such as service sector occupations. The purpose of this research is to examine the prevalence and the root causes of food insecurity in Maine. Additionally learn about people’s individual experiences with food insecurity. Included in the research method will be data collection through non-probability sampling, semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and analysis of secondary sources. Secondary research sources I will use in my research are federal, state government, and academic sources.
