Abstract
A large body of literature supports the increasing prevalence of parental incarceration and the deleterious effects this adverse experience has on children. The purpose of this study is to examine the current procedures and supports in elementary schools within Maine designated for children with incarcerated parents. The approach to the study will be using telephone interviews to complete a questionnaire designed to evaluate the procedures for notification when a parent of a student is incarcerated, and if/how services and supports are provided to the child and their family. The anticipated outcomes of this research study will offer a better understanding for how elementary schools are attempting to meet the needs of this population, examples of current systems of support, and gaps in services. These findings could have implications for social work practice within schools and collaborative processes between community stakeholders and Maine public elementary schools. Keywords: parental incarceration, children of incarcerated parents, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), childhood trauma
