Abstract

The Capen Story: Nineteenth Century Settlement, Lumber Operations, and Tourism on Deer Island and Moosehead Lake is an overview of nineteenth century diaries and lumber operation logbooks compiled by Aaron (1822-1899) and Lemuel Capen, two influential residents of the community at the center of this study. This project compiles weather reports, details on planting, hunting and fishing, and comments on the diarists’ engagements with the Deer Island and Moosehead Lake community. The data extracted from the diaries is compiled into a spreadsheet and has been sent to the Osher Map Library, Moosehead Historical Society, Maine Historical Society, Moosehead Marine Museum, and the Dorchester Historical Society for further use and study. This selected data enhances the understanding of the environmental history of Northern Maine at an extremely pivotal point, the end of the Little Ice Age.
