Abstract

Science fiction and popular media have long produced a negative perception of artificial intelligence. For many, AI now appears as hostile, if not detrimental, to humanity. These visions are wildly speculative; nevertheless, they have had an outsized impact on AI development. I will argue that a variety of genres such as novels, games, and popular journalism have stunted development of AI, especially in fields such as space exploration and healthcare. My background knowledge of computer science will assist me in explaining how current technologies actually operate, as opposed to common misconceptions about them. Guided by cautious optimism, I will discuss often neglected, actually existing technologies that have the potential to give the public a more positive view of the future of AI.
