Abstract

This thesis contains a selection of four short stories, one novelette, and the opening of a novel. Brief Moment is a fantasy story in which a super heroine reflects on whether utopia is an ideal worth chasing. The Treason of Mr. Tibbles is magical realism, and features a cat who is plotting against world security under his owner’s nose. Something Happened is another magical realism work, this time about an older man who wonders what his life has meant and whether he was predestined from the beginning. Charlie Echo is science fiction about the last Terran woman and her hunt for humanity on other worlds. The novelette, Season of Steel, is a fantasy about a professional duelist trying to decide where her loyalties lie. Finally, the prologue and first chapter of Eldencroft concern a pair of young magicians who hatch a plan to cheat their way into a prestigious organization. All works in the thesis are some flavor of genre fiction, and all deal with questions of identity and belonging.
