Abstract

Come Out the Other Side Okay: And Other Graffiti is a duet of stories dealing with the dangers of escapism and the appeal of imagining alternate worlds even as we fail to live up to them. They serve as stories about the inescapability of history and anthropogenic climate change, but personalized and made small.

The first story, “Cosmonaut Summer” is a science fiction story of alternate history, sexual awakening, and friendship. It is meant to be a response to our nostalgia for 80s culture and music, our vaporwave reimaginings of it, which are too often disinfectant. The second story, “Come Out the Other Side Okay”, is a novella-length piece of crime fiction featuring a failed detective, plans gone wrong, and the sometimes violent ways that works of art are co-opted, misinterpreted, and used to justify and absolve our worst instincts.
