Abstract
This thesis includes chapters from Afterlight, a science-fantasy novel that examines the themes of reincarnation, fate, religion, hope, and relationships. While the setting is a post-apocalyptic city with a rigid class and belief system, the world building normalizes same-sex relationships and societies that have no disparate gender roles. It is a story about two young women who must overcome social the differences that transcend their lifetimes and navigate their conflicted, but mutual feelings of attraction in order to topple a corrupt government and resurrect their world's dead sun. Ultimately, its message is that while history repeats itself, people are not doomed by the mistakes of their past and that it's worth fighting for a better future despite all obstacles and odds.
