Abstract

You're invited to join us for a special talk with John D’Emilio, a pioneering scholar whose work helped shape the field of LGBTQ history as we know it today.

Professor Emeritus of Gender & Women’s Studies and History at the University of Illinois at Chicago, D’Emilio is the author or editor of nearly a dozen influential books, including Sexual Politics, Sexual Communities: The Making of a Homosexual Minority in the United States, 1940-1970; Lost Prophet: The Life and Times of Bayard Rustin; and Intimate Matters: A History of Sexuality in America (co-authored with Estelle B. Freedman).

Over the past 50 years, LGBTQ history has grown from an almost invisible subject into a vibrant and expansive field of study. In this talk, D’Emilio will trace that remarkable evolution, highlighting key themes, pivotal moments, and some of the most important books that helped bring these histories to light.

This event is free and open to all, with an optional donation to support USM’s LGBTQ+ Collection Fund.

USM Students are also invited to a pre-event informal discussion between John D'Emilio and students regarding Queer history on Thursday, March 12 at 4:00 p.m. in the Special Collections Reading Room, Glickman Library 6th Floor. USM Students only.

Hope to see you there,
