Description
Tara Humphries uses they/them pronouns. They identify as queer, trans, nonbinary, and lesbian. They were born in Portland, Maine, but grew up in North Yarmouth and Durham. Tara Humphries received their bachelor’s degree in sociology at Bates College. They completed their Master of Divinity at Yale Divinity School, a program to prepare people for ordination to the Christian ministry. They work as a Minister at the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church in Portland, Maine. In this interview, Humphries shares how their Unitarian Universalist faith has shaped their perspective on their queer identity in their personal life and professional settings. They describe their involvement in the Pink Haven Coalition, which helps families of trans kids move from states with hostile queer legislation to safer communities. They also participate in TRUUsT, which stands for Transgender Religious Unitarian Universalist Together. It is a group of trans and nonbinary Unitarian Universalist religious professionals that provide advocates and support for each other within the denomination. Humphries discusses the intersectionality of the LGBTQ+ movement with other social justice movements. They reflect on the generational differences in the LGBTQ+ community and advise younger LGBTQ+ individuals to navigate their identities in professional settings. Humphries discusses their experience majoring in sociology and their close relationship with their advisor, Emily Kane, at Bates College. In addition, they described their experience attending the Yale Divinity School and exploring Christianity. Tara Humphries talks about their concerns about the rise of Christian nationalism and the need for people of all ages to get involved in local and national politics to combat hatred.
