Description

The interview covers the life experiences and perspectives of Myron Beasley, a black, gay, Jewish man who is a professor of American Studies at Bates College, with a focus on cultural politics, material culture, and social change. Beasley discusses how his diverse racial, ethnic, religious, and sexual identities have shaped his experiences and perspectives, particularly navigating the complexities of being a person of color in predominantly white spaces. He also reflects on his privileged upbringing and how that has influenced his worldview, the challenges he has faced due to perceptions of his race and class, as well as his deep connection to his Jewish faith and how it has intersected with his other identities. He discusses his passion for art, culture, and curation, and how he uses these mediums to provide platforms for marginalized voices and challenge dominant narratives in addition to his experiences and perspectives on the HIV/AIDS epidemic, including how it impacted his community and shaped his understanding of the government's response. This interview provides a rich and nuanced portrait of Beasley's multifaceted identity and how it has informed his academic, artistic, and personal pursuits.
