This Honor Roll is made of wood, and was painted by hand. The memorial also features small flags of Allied nations on either side of the Honor Roll.

Monument Description
The paper mill town of Rumford in the western foothills of Maine is far removed from the brutal trench warfare of WWI. Yet, when the call for Americans to join the war effort came, the men of this community were quick to answer. The service and sacrifice of these men is remembered in a sizeable honor roll, which still stands in the Rumford town auditorium.
William W. Hardy, a local painter, built Rumford's honor roll in 1918. Mr. Hardy placed an ad in the Rumford Falls Times asking for the names, enlistment dates, companies and regiments of all who had served or made “the supreme sacrifice”.[1] A gala event was held May 1, 1919 to both welcome home the men who served and dedicate the honor roll. The honor roll was rededicated on July 4,1993 following the refurbishing of the auditorium. The master of ceremonies was Edward A. Clohossey a past commander and member of VFW #1641. In Clohussey’s speech he stated “As you can see many were called; many chose to do their duty for our country. Even today 75 years after WWI…we can ‘boast’ that in a 12 mile radius of this spot 15% of the living population are Veterans.”[2] There is a proud legacy of service to the nation in Rumford.
Speaker Charles McPherson, American Legion Post 24 commander, presented a history of the life of Napoleon Ouellette. Sgt. Ouellette was the first veteran from Rumford to be killed in WWI and the American Legion Post 24 is named for him. Ouellette died on July 14,1918 from wounds received in battle. [3] Ultimately 27 men from Rumford lost their lives in battle or from wounds received in battle. Cub Scout Pack 581, Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts, Fraternal Order of Eagles, BPO Elks #862, and the Rumford Historical Society were all in attendance for the re-dedication of the honor roll.[4]
The honor roll stands against the back wall of the stage, taking up nearly the entirety of the wall. The names that William W. Hardy painted by hand remain clear. Flanking the long list of carefully hand painted names, are the flags of the allied nations. The colors of the flags have faded over the years but the carefully carved and painted wooden flourishes throughout the piece remain clear. Though today a curtain often hides the honor roll on the stage, the town remains proud of its legacy of service and is dedicated to remembering and honoring the men who served.
