Description of City/Town

Houlton, the shire town of Aroostook County, is situated on the eastern border of Maine, about halfway between Calais and Grand Falls on the St. John, near the north-eastern angle of Maine….There are two cheese-factories, two or more starch-factories, a canning-factory, a woolen-mill, four lumber-mills, three flour-mills, one tannery, two iron-foundries and machine-shops, two printing offices, and a sash, blind and door-factory….The village has many handsome residences, and there are several well-shaded and very attractive streets….The county court-house and jail occupy a central position in the village. Near by is Liberty Hall, the place of public entertainments in their variety. The town has a building exclusively for its own use nearer the river.

Mr. Geo. E. Norris of Brockton, Mass., arrived here last week for the purpose of making a lithographic view of Houlton, and has already entered upon the work, which we are assured will be one that our citizens may feel proud of when the job is done.

Mr. Geo. E. Norris of Brockton, Mass., was here last week delivering to subscribers his new photogravure of Houlton, and it fully comes up to the expectations of all who have encouraged the work. We think it remarkably correct and exact in all its details and must prove satisfactory to all who take a pride in the place. It is certainly the best view ever given of our town. Parties desiring copies of the view can obtain them of G. E. Norris at Campello, Mass., Box 657, or by leaving orders at this office, and copies will be forwarded by mail on approval. Price two dollars each.
