Abstract

In 1984 the first cases of AIDS are being diagnosed in Maine. Disinformation is rampant. Activists, including the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, take to the streets. Then, Charlie Howard, a young man in Bangor, is murdered because he’s queer. These events set the backdrop for Robert Carr’s book of poetry, The Unbuttoned Eye.
