Weinberg, Frederic C. Collection

Weinberg, Frederic biography written 5/2021 by his wife and edited by him

Frederic Weinberg grew up in Metuchen, New Jersey and graduated from Metuchen High School. After receiving a B.A. degree in English from the University of Connecticut in 1969, he enrolled in the University of New Hampshire’s program in Library Science. In 1972 he was accepted into a special program in Educational Media at Boston University where he received a master’s degree in Education.

In 1973 Fred began a long career as a library media specialist at Mt Ararat Middle/High School where he worked with faculty and students in the use of instructional media and research techniques and protocols. During his tenure Fred was on the executive board and was the facilities chair of the Maine Educational Media Association. In 2012 he was selected as Maine Library Media Specialist of the year by the Maine Association of School Libraries.

Fred and his family joined Beth Israel Congregation in 1977. During those years he has assumed coordination of all publications. He is the website manager, provides tech support, and does photography for synagogue publications. He is also the main researcher and archivist, co-chairs the facilities committee and is a member of the security committee.

Fred has always loved research and became a regional coordinator for Documenting Maine Jewry. With the support of DMJ and his finely honed research skills, he began a multiyear project detailing each Bath Jewish community family as they arrived in the city beginning in the 1880s. The in-depth research he began led to a culminating presentation in 2014 at which over 120 people, both Jews as well as other Bath community members, gathered to hear stories of the past as told by previous members of the congregation and their decedents. In addition, there were scores of old newspaper articles to read and memories to share. It was a remarkable event. Fred has continued gathering information from multiple sources and preserving them for the future.
