Description

Thirty-six portraits are arranged around a photograph of the campus of the Western State Normal and Training School, which shows the original Recitation Building on the left and Robie Hall, the new student dormitory, on the right. The Recitation Building was officially renamed Corthell Hall in 1926. Geneva M. Lawrence Gaskill (1878-1952) of Portland is the African American student pictured at the lower right of the arrangement, one of thirty-nine women who graduated from the two- or three-year teacher education course on June 22, 1900. Their class motto was "By the work one knows the workman."
