Le Club Jacques Cartier is one of Lewiston’s earliest and longest running snowshoe clubs. The club was first established in 1925 at the Convention Internationale de Raquetteurs Canadiens (International Convention of Candian Snowshoers) and was associated with the Union Américaine Fraternelle des Raquetteurs (American Snowshoe Union), which was established by Louis-Philippe Gagné in 1924. Though the club promoted snowshoeing, a popular sport in Canada, it also served as a year-round social club with a summer location in Sabattus, and hosted events such as dances, pot lucks, and bean dinners. The Club was forced to close its doors in 2011.
The Le Club Jacques Cartier currently collection contains certificates of appreciation and recognition, membership certifications, club bylaws, and a book of minutes from 1925-1929. There are also a number of letters between L’Insitut Jacques Cartier and Le Club Raquetteur Jacques Cartier. Items in the collection that have yet to be digitized include uniforms, programs, pins, medals, plaques, painted club signs and wall hangings, other club minutes, and two large plaster beer advertisements from Quebec.
