Abstract

With a push for more women to hold head coaching positions for athletics teams, it is important to understand what value they bring through their coaching and what they provide their student-athletes. The purpose of this phenomenological study is to explore the benefits of female head coaches for NCAA Division I student-athletes at their college or university within the United States. Using interviews and questionnaires with Division I NCAA student-athletes with a female head coach from various colleges and universities, data was collected to gain insight into their experiences. The collected data deepens our understanding of the rationale for female head coaching which will serve as guidance in hiring practices of athletic directors, student-athletes, and women interested in coaching.
