Abstract

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to explore and understand the experiences of female athletic directors, coaches, and other leaders working for NCAA affiliated institutions. The main goal was to uncover information about the pursuit of their careers in athletics after the passing of Title IX, and the factors that helped them get to where they are today. The aim is to create an informative guide that would provide recommendations to support women who aspire to work in leadership roles at the collegiate level. Using a phenomenological approach, the study examines the career journeys of 8 female athletic directors, coaches, senior women administrators, and other leaders who currently work at an NCAA member institution. The results of this study uncovered four major themes that will provide a framework to understand gender equity in collegiate athletics. This study has provided insight for future female leaders within the NCAA, along with awareness of current athletic programs as to the inequality of female leaders present within most collegiate athletic programs.
