Abstract
As a fantasy adventure story, Soul Siblings has its roots in genre fiction and the enduring myths that inspired it, but my influences and goals are broad. I think the biggest takeaway for me is just how much I’ve learned from this project. As my semesters here at Stonecoast went by and I experimented with more intentional craft choices and less intentional thematic resonances, I kept coming back to this novel to apply what I’d learned in each new chapter. Even now, I continue to glean new insights and techniques from it, as this will be my first attempt at revision for a novel-scale story. This novel isn’t a magnum opus or anything—more of a stepping-stone—but I’ve come to respect it as a story in its own right and hope to hone it into something truly worth reading. After all, this narrative has been my companion on this journey, a reliable constant as I stretch and experiment to fit into this new world of writing. (...)
