Abstract

Martin discusses the work of the machine tender and complexities of making paper machines run. He also discusses the changing nature of the company as it became managed (and especially mismanaged) by distant corporate owners, and describes the danger and stress of work.

Comments

Articulate on topics in abstract. Has an important statement on how Scott mismanaged S.D. Warren's best products and caused the company to lose market share through a self-inflicted wound; this is cited in Michael Hillard's published work on S.D. Warren. Also describes loss of income and status after laid off; was laid off only a couple of years after joining management; would not have lost job so quickly if he had remained union.
