The student newspaper collection contains copies of newspapers dating back to 1931. This collection includes not only The Free Press (starting with vol. 1, issue 1 in 1971), but also numerous small titles some of which only lasted one year or one issue. The newspapers come from USM and its preceding academic institutions: Gorham State Teachers College, Gorham State College, Gorham State College of The University of Maine, Portland University, Portland Junior College, University of Maine in Portland, and University of Maine Portland-Gorham.
