Comments
Of special interest is her description of how the Acadian French of the Madawaska region (known as the "Valley" - short for the Upper St. John River Valley) inculcated a distinctive work ethic. Maine Acadians migrated since 1950 in significant numbers to Connecticut and later also Portland, Maine area. Acadian migrants recognize in each other this work ethic. Also describes the "matriarchal" character of daily life in Acadian families. With very large families - ranging from five to over twenty children - mothers are in charge of assigning work to children and enforcing their work discipline from a young age.
