Abstract
This study seeks to gain a better understanding of what the challenges are that family-owned businesses face as they attempt to transfer their business from one generation down to the next. The fact that family-owned businesses contribute significantly to the U. S. economy as well as the fact that they do not typically survive a generational transition make understanding what contributes to a successful transition important.
